HBA San Francisco – Maximizing the Benefits of Advances in Personal Genomics

HBA San Francisco – Maximizing the Benefits of Advances in Personal Genomics
Event Details:

Science and technology are constantly synergizing to move genomic advances forward at an exponential rate - leading to faster, more accurate, and cheaper methods for sequencing the human genome. These advances have led to the dawn of the age of “personal genomics.” Such unprecedented analytical power has led to amazing developments in medicine, but this progress also has potential legal, ethical, and social implications for humankind.

The information afforded by the latest genomic advances is capable of profoundly affecting each and every one of us. It is therefore necessary that we gain an appreciation for the latest genetic technology and its impact on our lives. In this program we will provide a brief overview of the current technological landscape while introducing possible implications for individual privacy and policy issues. The goal of this discussion is to enlighten the audience as to how they can maximize the benefits of genetic information in their lives while minimizing the consequences.

Learning Objectives:
1. To receive a brief overview of the latest human genetic technologies in use today.
2. To learn about the implications of these technologies on individual privacy and policy issues.
3. To gain insight as to how we can maximize the benefits of these technologies for the improvement of human health while avoiding potential consequences.
