Healthcare: There ain't nothing like it!
Submitted by Shannon Smith on Mon, 2010-01-11 10:59
New to the country and facing one of the toughest job markets of this century, Steven Wener got his lucky break when someone from Transworld Systems spotted his resume online. According to Steve, they were looking for someone who was driven, had sales experience and could do the numbers. Given his experience as a successful real estate agent in Canada, Steve definitely fit the bill. Within less than a year, Steve has been awarded the Medical Group Management Associations (MGMA) adminiserve partner status and placed onto the high potential medical team within Transworld Systems for his work with healthcare providers. When asked about his first impression of the US healthcare system, the word that comes to mind says Steve is fragmented. No one pays providers the same amount. There are different rates for the insured patients, cash rates for the non-insured and patients without insurance that can’t afford to pay or simply choose not to pay. The odds also seem to be stacked against the healthcare providers. Most doctors will provide a good service but between 2-5% often goes uncollected because of delinquent accounts. It’d be hard to run a business like that when most providers only net between 8 and 12% profit. Leaving 2-5% of their revenue on the table takes a serious cut out of a practice’s profits and in some cases, threatens their ability to continue providing service. I have to admit, says Steve I like the challenge of investigating how providers run their practice. Even though the end goal is the same, few practices do things the same way. So once I figure out what they are doing, than I can recommend solutions that best fit says Steve. We review their accounts receivable, the average co-pay and their policies and processes for collecting money upfront and through their billing process. Providers that become clients have outstanding A/R from as little as $3000 to hundreds of thousands, sometimes even millions. Sometimes the AR is a bunch of small balances of $20 dollars and in other cases, it’s a mix of large and small balances. It is mind boggling says Steve, but at the same time it’s exciting because our solutions have made such a huge difference to our clients, ranging from a single General Practitioner to major hospital chains. The fact that my service does help and makes a difference is what I love best about my job. It’s the same feeling of satisfaction that I used to get when I sold someone a home rather than just a house. The healthcare industry is more complex than most because it’s a business with that human element says Steve. If you like a good challenge, want to make a difference and like working with people, the healthcare industry might be a good fit for you too. There are lots of opportunities to get your foot in the door even if you don’t have industry experience.
