The Future of Branding: It's you!
I attended the HBA event at Genetech featuring key note speaker Ellen Looyen, Branded with Chrisma, earlier this week. It was such a fun event and Ellen gave an inspirational presentation about the future of branding. In a word, it's you (the people). Companies are realizing that their employees are an important component of their brand. The perception of the brand can impact the company's ability to attract talent and consequently, their ability to innovate, grow and prosper. Think about the last time you interviewed for a job....Did you consider the people in your decision to accept the job?
Perceptions of people matter. Perception is the visual (including energetic), emotional and the rational images that are associated with you. Fortunately, once you know what those things are you can manage them. You can do the exercise that we did to test your perception. Tell a friend or your colleague in two minutes what you do. In other words, give them your elevator pitch and then ask them how they perceive you. Did they get the idea that they liked you (right brain) and that you have enough knowledge to help them (left brain) to make a decision about whether they would hire you? Probably not.
One of the ladies in the audience shared her example. She started by saying that she sets up the infrastructure to deliver the HIV vaccine to developing countries. That's pretty interesting but by the end of Ellen's presentation when she did her pitch again it was something like I am saving hundreds of thousands of lives by helping to deliver the HIV vaccine. And then she hooked us by sharing a highlight of her job which was when she got an email saying simply "God bless you" from a physician in Zimbabwe. Now that's powerful - that's the power of charisma.
According to Webster dictionary, charismatic people throughout history have had the unique ability to capture the imagination of others and inspire them to be supportive or devoted to a cause. Ellen's formula for cultivating charisma is:
- Cultivating likeability - Friendliness, Revevance, Empathy and Realness
- Having Self-Awareness - Managing your State of Mind
- Artfully Communicating - Speaking to both sides of the brain with sound bites
- Rapport Building - Congruence (Tiger Woods); Sales Cycle
- Inspiring Confidence - # Reason
- Serving as a Leader - Examples of Charismatic Leaders: Obama, Oprah and Palin
- Maintaining Presence - Busy Mind, Worrying Mind and Critical Mind
- Activating your Passion - "Share the experience of your passion + value"
Tell your story not what you do! Now try giving your elevator pitch again and see if your friends and colleages notice a difference. If they want to hire you, you've got it!
